Since 1993, Dana Lixenberg has dedicated her time to the project Imperial Courts, which sketches life in Watts, a district in South Central L.A. that is ridden with poverty, race riots and gang wars. Huis Marseille exhibits a selection of fifty of her monumental portraits, a video installation and an audio installation.

Following visits of fifty-some artists studios in Belgium, the gallery will present works by nine very diverse and emerging artists. The title of the exhibition not only refers to the eponymous restaurant in Ghent where the idea was born during a lunch meeting in between studio visits. It also underlines the ambition of these nine artists as well as the purpose of the show, to put a spotlight on talented artists who haven’t yet had many opportunities to showcase their works: Sarah Caillard, Étienne Courtois, Kasper De Vos, Douglas Eynon, Julien Goniche, Liesbeth Henderickx, Alejandra Hernández, Sanam Khatibi and Klaas Vanhee.

Les pratiques des artistes invités ( Rémi Bragard, Anne-Valérie Gasc, Stéphanie Majoral, Josué Rauscher et Yves Schemoul) réinterrogent le double statut de la photographie : à la fois objet et médium (intermédiaire/moyen/support). Les productions qui en résultent se situent souvent aux croisements de différents médiums manifestant leurs porosités grandissantes et l’éclatement de leurs frontières. Ces pratiques hybrides émergeant dans le champ de la photographie débordent de fait vers le champ plus large de l’art contemporain. Jusqu’à étendre l’image à d’autres champs, à tous les champs. Le premier volet Image/objet pour l’année 2016 se déclinera autours de pratiques qui spatialisent l’image, perturbant les catégories. L’image se fait sculpture, sort du cadre, prend forme, s’augmente, devient volume, se déploie au delà de sa planéité. Commissariat : Doriane Souilhol

Scanners series by Chris Dorland incorporate a method of inkjet printing and fabric sewing to create large format paintings that are at once digital and highly physical continuing the artist’s on-going investigation of consumer space and the contradictions of 21st century life.

In the internationally traveling solo exhibition, An Unbelievable Truth (previously seen at Nest Hague under the title: Moving a brick through water), Sarah & Charles show work from the past two years. A re-interpretation of images and visual language (in-and-of-itself) are central to the exhibition, arising from narrative, fiction and mise-en-scene in the different works discussed.

Là-bas, il y a tellement de chevaux qu’on ne se préoccupe même plus de leur donner un nom. Cette région du Loinistan, sauvage, méconnue et fantasmée, constitue un mélange de beauté et de rudesse enclavée au creux des montagnes. Y rechercher le sublime, la distance, mais aussi l’imagerie et les croyances qui y sont liées est comme concrétiser un rêve éveillé. Une hésitation entre mirage et réalité de ce qui se présente à l’horizon. Le livre de Matthieu Litt Horsehead Nebula sera présenté lors de l’exposition.

Daniel Gustav Cramer’s exhibition is in its essence a portrait of a landscape, of a man on a road, lost in his thoughts; it’s a portrait of the experience of a single moment. If you take this image as a starting point, the exhibition unfolds and reveals the different faces a journey can have.

With New Arrivals, Bruno Zhu (Portugal, 1991) remodels the Foam 3h library into another reading room – one that flattens the representation of reading itself. Twisting time and space, both physically and conceptually, the installation juxtaposes visual motifs from the private space into the public and vice versa. This way, Zhu light-heartedly explores his fascination for photography’s ambivalent symbol as surface and object, representation and appropriation.

Hiroshi Takizawa‘s A Sculpture is a Scupture and Ceremony is the artist’s first published works. The publication brings together a selection of images from Takizawa’s photographic series Warp and marks amongst the photographer’s most recent publications which include Trip Zine, co-created with Daisuke Yokota, and Mass – shortlisted for the Paris Photo Aperture Photobook Awards in 2015.
