In his artistic approach Heiko Karn (b. 1971) tackles the question of what can be seen under which conditions and how certain objects can be perceived. The boundary between object and viewer as it is also established by the Kunstverein’s window display is another important point of interest for Karn. In private as well as in public, language and signs in general produce labellings, representations and appropriations – all indicating a definite aim to influence certain interests and opinions.

Two young designers, Lenneke Wispelwey and Paula Arntz, graduated from the Department of Product Design at the ArtEZ Academie Arnhem, work independently, but exhibit together. They show products of porcelain and paper based on a principle that each of them developed independently, but which shares a very similar festive atmosphere. Lenneke Wispelwey loves working with ceramics in small series, and feels her work should make people smile.

MY Public Space / « …to find emptiness in cityscapes » is an exhibition that offers a platform to artists whose works appropriate or scan the total emptiness of public spaces in such a way that they bestow new meaning on what appears self-evidently absent/present, and by doing so inspire people to approach public (but nevertheless extremely personal) open space in a new – more personal, critical and creative – way. Jean-Baptiste Bernadet lives and works in Brussels and Paris. For his first solo show at Maes & Matthys, he presents a new series based around the legendary Las Vegas slogan “What Happens Here Stays Here”, which sets the tone of the exhibition. Applied to painting, this phrase undermines the emotional and intellectual impact commonly ascribed to aesthetic experience.
